When I tried compact and repair of my database, a db1 database was created and in my original database a table MSysCompactError was created containing a record with -1206 unrecognized database format ...tblIndividuals I took the database home and tried compacting with Access 2007 and it seemed to have worked. What and why are these db1, etc databases that are created when compacting? [this is my first post - I am a newbie]

Hi,
do you mean that Access creates additional mdb files that are called db1, db2...in the directory that the original application is housed in every time you compact/repair? What permissions do you have on the folder the application is in. You need full read/write/delete permissions since Access actually creates a new application imports everything into it from the old one, deletes the old one and renamed the new to the old title. If it can't delete the old one then it will be stuck in the middle of the process.
HTH
Good luck
