Hello,
I work in an office and I developped an application that I would like to install on another computer for now and eventually on 5 others. I know that at first I should split the database. After that thungs become confusing. What is the best way to store the data over shared folder? network? server? not sure what is what...(IMG:style_emoticons/default/frown.gif) Thank you for the help. Regards, Vick |

I've had very little problem working with a Front End/Back End system where the split back end is stored on an internally accessible network drive in a relatively secure place.
With the front end, I have the users run a small batch file that retrieves the most current copy of the front end (which is stored in the same place as the back end on the network drive), save it to a folder on their local machine and open it locally. This allows me to do 'un-linked' front end development on my own system until the point of distribution when I can simply relink the tables to the back end and upload the new and improved copy of the front end to the network folder. Seamless updates to the front end. If work needs to be done on the back end, I have enabled the functionality of a timer that can be initiated to warn each active user that the database will be shut down. After a certain amount of time, all front ends are closed and I can proceed to do maintenance on the back end. When I'm finished I'm able to reinstate the front ends to allow access again. So far, within a relatively small network environment, this has worked quite well. |

Please correct me if I'm wrong.....if I split the database, it means that I can have multiple users working on their stations and retreiving data from the shared folder that is located on my hard disk that contains the tables. We have wired internet, how do I setup a shared network drive that is not necessarly accessible to all employee, just my team? I won't have to install to intall the full application on their pc?
Thank, Vick |

Hi Vick,
I guess what we need to do first is define what type of network you are using. Are you using a client/server or a peer-to-peer network? Is there a file server where you can put the database, or will it be residing on your own machine for others to connect? Just my 2 cents... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/2cents.gif) |

It is on my own machine....
I'm sorry if I'm asking potentially obvious questions but it is because I have never done this before. I appreciate the help Thanks again Vick |

Hi Vick,
No problem... That's what we're here for. If you want to store the BackEnd on your own machine, you will have to create a "Share" and assign permissions to your team. They will then have to "map" their computers to the share you created so they can use the BE. What OS are you using? Just my 2 cents... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/2cents.gif) |

I found a "ODBC Microsoft Access Setup"
Can this do the job? |

Hi Vick,
Not sure what that is... If it's the ODBC Manager, then that will not really help other users connect to your machine if you haven't shared it. Just my 2 cents... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/2cents.gif) |
