I need to add a filter pull down box to replace [] function i have in the the query my report is based on. With the [] the user has to type in the name, instead I would like pulldown box to pop up.

You can't modify the little popup that comes up so you'll have to create a form for opening the report and put a combobox for filtering the report on it.
