Hi,
I am using Access 2007. I don't know how but now I have an .MDB file instead of .ACCDB file. 1. Can I convert .mdb to .accdb. If yes, how? 2. As I understand, .accdb files do not support user access and permission. However, I can see that this is available for .mdb file. I would like to know how to set up user access and permission? I would like to set up groups (admin, read only & read-write). I would then like to assign users to this group. For users, I would like to create specific login names for them and passwords. Please advise. Thanks, SG |

For conversion, you will have to use SaveAs... on the Ribbon menu.

You can convert to 2007 but keep in mind if you have alot of VBA that is using references then chances are that you will run into snags especially if you're using any type of ActiveX controls. Nothing major, usually just changing some of the references and maybe some slight recoding.
As far as user permissions, though 2007 no longer has the user level securities, you can still design your own security. Theres a number of ways to do this. You can have the user names and passwords stored in a table or just have the database perform an authenticaion with their Windows login. You can then create your own group levels and permissions. Does this require some coding? Absolutely, it does. I've done this for a number of databases and the first go around was quite time consuming but now that I have the code written and the tables setup, it's pretty easy to add security to any database. |
