Hi all,
Wondering if anyone's come across this before... my desktop on a Win7 32bit machine shows nothing, all of a sudden, yet all the files/links still reside in the desktop folder. Restarted but no change, still a blank desktop. Can't copy from the explorer folder to the desktop itself, says file already exists. Didn't do any updates/restarts, one minute they were there a few minutes later they weren't. Thanks in advance for any thoughts. |

Have you tried right-clicking the desktop, click View and make sure Show Desktop Icons is checked?

That "desktop" folder should definitely reflect what you're seeing on your desktop.
Has someone perhaps played an April Fool's prank on you? Dennis |

Hmmm... they're back... didn't even know about the Show Desktop Icons. Nevermind. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/fundrink.gif)

Jack,
happened to me once, don't know what I did to cause it, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/iconfused.gif) but right clicking on the desktop >>selecting View had to recheck display icons & voila -- they were back! Scared the beejabbers out of me for a while though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) HTH |

Our son (16mo) sometimes gets a hold of the mouse and plays around, but neither my wife nor I recall him getting a hold of it in the time it went/came back.
Maybe it was an april fools joke (IMG:style_emoticons/default/iconfused.gif) Anyway, now I know about that option to hide desktop icons. |

Only reason why I thought of that is because I had the same thing happen to me. I don't entirely understand the reasoning behind the option to hide the icons!

Maybe it's so you can enjoy your wallpaper without browsing for it?
There are times it would be REALLY nice to find out the thinking behind a feature in software... Dennis |

I'm not quite sure why one would opt for that either... maybe it is just so you can enjoy a wallpaper (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dazed.gif) THanks guys, |

Jack,
As much as I try to de-clutter my desktop, I don't succeed. But "Fences" (from StarDock, I believe) is a nice little bit of freeware that "corrals" everything on the desktop. I agree with Dennis - hide the icons for a clear view of the wallpaper. AvgJoe (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hat_tip.gif) |

I actually do pretty good keeping it organized... each corner is for links for certain types of stuff, and I rarely ever keep anything on there that doesn't need to be there (I keep a TEMP subdir on there for dropping email attachments, etc).
Clutter in general drives me nuts... I'm pretty OCD with that stuff. I can't open the bedroom closet since I've gotten married! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |
