I've read a lot of posts and threads. The Information SuperHighway has so much traffic , ya never can seem to find what you need. I thought it might be helpful to have a sort of index of DB design resources and some helpful hints along the way.
Required Readings, print out, hang up or place in 3 ring binder, read at least 10 times all 3 parts. Part#1 Glossary of Terms And Definitions Glossary Part #2 FullQualifiedNaming FullyQualifiedNaming Part #3 A little Treatise On Normalazation TreatiseOnNormalazation The Three Sections are a great set together. Then for practice, try your hand at Building NoahP's Example (print out and save also) NormalizingADataBase NormalizingADatabase tbowconn builds NoahP's Table Example(print and save with NoahP's text example ScreenshotOfTables More normalazation(same stuff , explained slightly different)Ditto Print/save NormalazationRules Now there is not more than 20 or so pages above, Good to print and save all of it, 3 ring binder) Too superficial ? Lets spread it out a bit. Go here, Print out the General And Tables Chapters.(100 pages or so, ditto 3 ring binder) (I Haven't got to the other tabs yet, A lot more stuff there) microsoft-accessolutions Paydirt!!! Tutorial with working examples and exercises. Print out both sections , in separate 3 ring binders MS ACCESS & VBACCESS about 100 pages each. The Tutorials walk through most major phases of design, light on normalazation though. The BIG BONUS Is the downloadable exersise folder. About 20 working example databases of various business models. Tutorials&ExerciseExamples The rest doesn't really needed to be printed as long as you can find them when you need them. They explain a lot . BasicRecursiveJoin RecursiveJoin PedigreeExample PedigreeExample PedigreeDiscussion PedigreeDiscussion WhyToAvoidUsingCompositePrimaryKeys AvoidUsingCompositePrimaryKeys Look-upPrimer lookup Primer Adiscussion on StoringCalculatedValuesAndAuditTrails, by GroverParkGeorge StoringCalculatedValues BOM(Bill of Materials Database)and other good resources. BillOfMaterialsDB Enjoy Happy Reading/Learning Charlie It's not complete, but it's a start. |
