is there a way to set security in excel (say via simple vb)
to give user only write access to two columns (fields) to
make comments (read only on everything else)

Hi Highlight your 2 columns then format menu format cells and then protection tab uncheck the locked cells option. Now goto Tools ---> protection ---> protect Sheet (Password Optional) and there ya go your two coloms are the only ones read write
