My Windows 8.1 laptop has an HDMI Port but not USB 3.0. I am looking to get a portable USB hard drive and it seems that most that are available have USB 3.0 ports. I have found a HDMI to USB 3.0 converter on-line. Before buying I want to make sure that I can use the converter to connect the drive to my laptop's HDMI port. I have no other devices with USB 3.0 capabilty. Has anybody tried to connect a USB 3.0 drive to HDMI successfully?

Glenn do you not have any USB ports at all???

A USB 2.0 should still work shouldn't it, it will just be slower.

Hi Jon,

The laptop has three USB ports but they appear to be 1.0 (black rather than blue) but I will have to look closer. Thanks,

Glenn

I had no idea they were colour coded?
I know for certain that my pc can read my external HD (which is a USB 3.0 2TB drive) on all its USB ports and has a mix of USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.

I'd be surprised if you laptop couldn't read it on your existing ports.

Those converters allow you to connect a HDMI Monitor to a USB Port - not the other way round.

What kind of laptop do you have? My HP Envy laptop has several USB 3.0 Ports and they are also black... Check out the symbols next to the ports - if it is USB 3.0, it should look like this:

Attached File  The_USB_3_0_Icon.png ( 7.49K )Number of downloads: 12

And yes, a USB 3.0 drive will definitively work on USB 2.0.

Thanks Marsupilami7. so that rules out the adapter for my purposes. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron purchased last year. I will check the symbol.

According to Wikipedia black is used for both USB 1 and 2

Seems to me that the color coding is not a reliable means of determining the USB version capabilities. After all, it is just the color of the plastic. I imagine a production line running out of blue USB ports and switching to black ones till they have the blues back in stock. I've seen that happen on a few recent HP PC's - all the USB ports were black, but the specs and the Device manager indicated that at least one was USB 3.0. The Device Manager and PC specs are where I look to determine if a machine has USB 3.0 capabilities or not. I don't think USB 1.0 is even in production any more. JOPO

Thanks Mark,

I have checked my system information and I do indeed have at least one usb 3.0 port.

Glenn - glad to hear it. Are any of them 'blue'?

All of them actually. I was going be memory when I thought I was comparing 1.0 ports to 2.0 ports. I was actually looking at my 3.0 ports at the time.
