Full Version: Moving controls in Access 2007 report design

I have read help and haven't been able to figure something out yet that is driving me nuts!
The new report design seems to want to position my fields right next to each other and I want to be able to move them freely and have more space between them. I used to use Ctrl and arrow to move them where I wanted and this doesn't seem to work. Is there a setting somewhere that I don't know about so that I can still do this in Access 2007?

Hi Brandi,

By default, Access 2007 applies what we call "control layouts" to the controls on forms and reports. These control layouts make resizing, moving, and aligning controls very easy. However, as you have observed, they do present a distinct problem when you want to make individual control adjustments.

You can remove the control layout applied to a control (or more than one control) by doing the following:
1. Open the form/report in Layout or Design View
2. Highlight the control or controls you want removed from the layout
3. Click the Arrange tab on the Ribbon
4. Click the Remove button in the Control Layout group on the Arrange tab

You can now move/resize that control(s) without affecting other controls.

One more problem I have noticed. The report design creates an automatic count at the end of the report.
For example it counts the number of employees.

However, it puts a funny little line at the top of the column and one below the column just before it prints the subtotal. It doesn't appear that I can actually select that line as an object and delete it.

It doesn't seem clear that those lines are part of a border either, although I see some new properties for Grid Top, Bottom, Left and Right. I fooled with those making the top and bottom transparent and then the whole field disappeared.

Any good free online turotials that go into this level of detail to answer questions on all of the new features of Access 2007?

Hi Brandi,

Yes, the Gridlines settings are the ones that make the "line" appear.

- You can adjust the Style for Top, Bottom, Left, and Right.
- You can adjust the color. Right now it probably has something like "Borders/Gridlines." You can adjust the color if you'd like.
- You can also adjust the width for Top, Bottom, Left, and Right.

Try adjusting those settings to get the result you'd like to see.
