Every once in a while, I will open up Excel and notice that it is open in "[Compatibility Mode]" - in other words, it's using the old Excel 2003 file format.
I could've sworn I switched this several times by going to:
File -> Options -> Save -> Save files in this format
and changing it to Excel Workbook.
Is there something I can do to make this change permanent? Is there something I'm doing that is causing this to change without realizing it?

Daniel,
Looks promising - I'll give it a try.

I have this very problem on a client's server, never found a solution, but today, I'd did a quick look again to try and help you out and that was the first link I found. Funny how things go sometimes.

Daniel,
Well, it definitely makes sense... it's just a little non-intuitive. Instead of trusting that the Excel setting will not change, you force Excel to open an Excel2007 format file every time it starts.

This is what we like to call a Microsoftism! Why use a property or setting when you can use a conveluted technique instead. All that matters is that it appears to work.

The folder 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLSTART' is empty for me, and I seem to have no trouble retaining the setting for the format. I am using Office 2010 (64bit). So, I wonder if the setting is used when a file is NOT present?
... No time to play at the moment, otherwise I would check it out myself ...
