The IT people here at my company say they don't like Access because it doesn't work well in a multi-user environment. I would appreciate what the heavies on this site think of that statement.

How many people and how many records are you talking about? I have applications with 20 users and 60,000 records. I have not had a complaint of assesibility or slowing down in 2 years.

Give me an idea of what you want to achieve and I will give you my 2 cents worth.

If the database is developed correctly (with a back-end and front-end and having it normalized), I see no problems. With Access 97, there are some problems with record locking (which there are things you can do to get around it). I am in charge of three database systems where I work with all three being access 97. I have had no real complaints from the users who use the systems. I feel that access works rather well here. I don't see why an IT person would think that (but then again we have some IT people here that are about as bright as a burnt out light buld (IMG:http://www.utteraccess.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:http://www.utteraccess.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) )

I've seen where MS recommends Access for up to five concurrent users, and SQL Server above that. Of course, MS wants to sell SQL Server (IMG:http://www.utteraccess.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Thanks for your comment. The project I am proposing would have about 15-20 users max, and would involve about 20,000 records after about 2 years. I suspect our real problem is that a) our IT people don't want to do the project, but also b) they don't want me or anyone else to try to build it. The project would be a estimating/quote system for forms and commercial printing.
