Long Integer

Long Integer is a Data Type

When designing a table, a choice for Data Type is Number and Field Size can be Long Integer. Number is just a general term and not really a data type. The data type is actually Long Integer. The Long Integer data type is often used to relate tables since a 4-byte key field provides good performance.

When AutoNumber is chosen as the 'data type' for a field in the Design View of a table, the data type is really Long Integer.

Range of Values for Long Integer

whole numbers range: -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647

Storage Size (bytes)

size : 32-bit (4-byte) numbers

Type-Declaration Character

type-declaration character : &

Code Declaration Example

  Dim nRecordNumber As Long, nMyLong&

AutoNumber Primary Key is Artificial

An AutoNumber primary key is an artificial key because its value has no business value. Using an AutoNumber for the primary key, as opposed to a natural key, is generally more efficient in terms of performance since a Long Integer takes just 4 bytes to store whereas a natural key generally takes more space.
