Query

Definition: A construct for passing a structured set of instructions to a database engine with the intention of (1) retreiving results, or (2) performing an action against the data or the data source.

The term "Query" is often used interchangeably with the acronym SQL (Structured Query Language). In the context of this AccessWiki, Query generally refers to a query written in Jet-SQL designed to talk to a Microsoft Jet database engine.

Every engine has it's own unique implementation of SQL. Thus, you may hear differing terms like Jet-SQL, T-SQL (Transact-SQL), and Oracle SQL which refer to specific engines (Jet, SQL Server, and Oracle, respectively).

Other engines may even refer to Query objects differently, such as a SQL Server View, but they are essentially the same type of entity.
