Referential Integrity

Definition: A constraint (or limit) to data that is created between one or more related fields in one or two tables.

This is the primary construct that defines a RDBMS as relational. It guarantees that incoming data is valid based on existing data within the database. Invalid entries are forcibly disallowed from being entered.
