Here's a list of online virus scanners that you can use if you think you might have a virus and your installed antivirus program isn't picking it up.
Different antivirus products have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to detecting, so it's always good to be able to run a "backup" scan if you're in doubt. Also, some of the most prolific viruses (like BugBear and such) do damage to many antivirus products, so they can render your installed AV software useless. It's time like that when it's good to have another method to scan for infections....
Panda ActiveScan
From: Homepage Description
Requirements: Requires Internet Explorer
Panda ActiveScan is a powerful online antivirus that scans your computer for viruses, free of charge, with just a simple click from your browser. ActiveScan is updated constantly, giving it the ability to detect even the latest viruses. ActiveScan is designed to search and eliminate viruses found in your computer. ActiveScan is not designed to provide permanent protection; Panda Software provides a complete line of security solutions designed to do this.
From: Tucows Description
Requirements: Requires IE 4 or higher and Bitdefender plugin
It can detect more than 48,000 computer viruses and it disinfects in all archived formats, assuring data and program integrity using the CRC control technique for detecting infected files.
*indygo's note: The thing I like most about Bitdefender's free online scan is the ability to scan just one folder if you want and additional features like email scanning.
McAfee FreeScan
From: Homepage Description
Requirements: Requires IE 4 or higher, Mcafee Plugin, and user registration
McAfee FreeScan helps you detect thousands of viruses on your computer. Based on the award-winning McAfee VirusScan engine, FreeScan searches for viruses, including the latest known "in the wild" viruses, and displays a detailed list of any infected files. Should viruses be found, FreeScan even provides links to give you more information about the virus and what you can do to clean your system.
Symantec Security Check
From: Homepage Description
Requirements: Requires IE 5 or higher with ActiveX enabled and Symantec Plugin
Symantec's Security Check tool includes multiple scans for security vulnerabilities, including a virus scan. The following scans can be performed:
Hacker Exposure Check: Checks whether your computer allows unknown or unauthorized Internet communications.
Windows Vulnerability Check: Checks whether basic information about your computer, including your PC's network identity, is exposed to hackers.
Trojan Horse Check: Checks whether your computer is safe from Trojan horses.
Antivirus Product Check: Checks whether you're protected by a commonly-used virus protection product.
Virus Protection Update Check: Checks whether you're safe from the latest viruses. Applicable if you have a virus protection product.
Virus Detection: Check your computer for known viruses and Trojan horses.
Pc-Cillin (Trend Micro Housecall)
From: PCMagazine and ConsumerGuide
Requirements: Requires Housecall Plugin
HouseCall allows you to scan your PC for viruses, spyware and to shred CollWebSearch (CWS).
The first time you access Housecall, you'll need to download a small browser plug-in. Once installed, this plug-in is used to scan your system's memory and storage media for any signs of a virus, worm or other potentially destructive piece of computer code. Being Web-based, Housecall does not rely on traditional methods to update and distribute its database of virus definitions. Each time you initiate a scan, the latest definitions are transferred automatically to your system. In other words, Housecall is always current, ready to identify and eliminate the digital threat that emerged yesterday, today. Few antivirus utilities offer this degree of timeliness in their protection. The service loads quickly and lets you clean or delete any infected file it finds. The browser displays a list of drives on your machine, allowing you to select which ones to scan. A separate window displays progress reports and lists infected files for treatment. HouseCall isn't fancy, but this one-trick service gets the job done quickly.
