UtterAccess Forums _ Q & A - Software _ Windows Hello Not Available

Posted by: ferreirah Jul 14 2019, 08:36 AM

I hope I am posting in the right forum. I recently updated my windows 10 to the May 2019 update. I got a Lenovo T430 laptop with Windows 10 Prof. 64 bit.
As far as I can tell the webcam is working. I tried to set up facial recognition with windows hello but it says it's not available on my laptop.
I already got facial recognition working on my galaxy phone. I thought it would be great if I can lock and unlock and login with facial recognition on my laptop.
Why is it not available on my laptop? Am I doing something wrong? Are there any specific requirements for this?

Hi. I could be wrong but if you get a notification that Windows Hello is not available, then it probably means your device is not compatible with Windows Hello. I think only certain types of cameras can work with Windows Hello. Does your laptop have a fingerprint scanner?

I'd recommend consulting the Lenovo website for documentation on whether, and how, this model supports the function.

A quick review of the L indicates this model is no longer available and came with Windows 7 installed when it was offered, so I'm thinking it probably didn't/doesn't support this Windows 10 feature. Of course, further research might turn up something more on their website.

Thank you all for your responses. I thought that any webcam would do, but I was wrong. When I googled the requirements for facial recognition under windows hello it said that you need a near infrared 3d camera. Now I understand why it doesn't work on my laptop. Yes you are right. The laptop came with windows 7 but I upgraded it to windows 10.

Good information to know. Thanks. Technological advances come so fast these days it can sometimes seem almost overwhelming to try to keep up.
