i am trying to figure out a way when a test result is positive for listeria that the test day goes back to day 1 .

Any chance you can post some data? De-identify it if necessary. But your design is going to give you headaches. If you did it like
(PatientID, EventDate, Symptom, TestResult) then it wouldn't be that bad.

But looping? Only if I'm forced to. Performance when you write stuff like that will make you cry if you have a lot of data. Best off not to do that unless you don't have any other choice.

Perhaps treat the measurement as "Days since"?
Rather than back to day 1, dayCount = 0
