UtterAccess Forums _ Interface Design _ Use A Serial Or Key To Enable A Client App

Posted by: mmadani Mar 6 2019, 10:16 AM

Hello;
I am trying to see if there is a way to require a serial number on a production application I am developing in access. Free is always good

Commercial : need recommendations. Budget /Money is a factor though.

Thanks to all

Yes there is and I have various systems in use on my own commercial apps.
However you would need to plan carefully what you want to do.

Suggest you use a professional installer package which requires users to enter a licence key during installation.
If your apps have a site licence that may be all you need to worry about.

But if the licence is only for a specific number of users or workstations, things can get very complicated indeed.
How will you prevent users exceeding that limit?
You could include an activation process but it becomes even more complicated.

So yes its possible but possibly not for the faint hearted

Thanks Collin !
Can you point me to some resources please?

DO you if anyone attempted that in code?

Thanks

I'm sorry Mike but I worked out the code myself over a period of many weeks & LOTS of testing.
There may well be some examples online you can adapt but I don't know of any to point you towards.

For obvious reasons, anyone who has developed code of this type is going to want to keep it secure.

What I will share with you is that I allow an unlimited number of installations no matter how many licences are purchased
However the number of licences determines the number of users allowed at any one time
So 3 licences means a MAXIMUM of 3 users at once.... though clients can purchase additional licences at any time.

I also included an activation process before the application was completely unlocked
AFAIK, the system has worked perfectly & I've not been made aware of any usability issues (or piracy)

BUT, as I said, selling apps with a site licence will significantly simplify the development work required

I can recommend some professional installers however e.g. Inno (free), SamLogic Visual Installer (which I use & recommend).
Sage also used to do a very expensive top end installer package for Access but I believe it has been discontinued
