UtterAccess Forums _ Microsoft Excel _ Open Pdf File In Excel Via Macro ?

I have to open a bazillion .pdfs in Excel - is this possible using a VBA macro ?

Simultaneously or sequentially? You may not have enough RAM to open that many pdfs all at once....

Seriously, are you planning to put the pdfs in Excel? Or just open them in the Acrobat Reader from Excel?

Doing them one at a time is fine, and opening them in the Acrobat Reader from Excel is fine, too - as you can tell, this is new territory for me - thanks so much for chiming in!

Update: Just tried opening a .pdf in Excel, and it was all gobbly-gook, with the funny characters - ugh if no one knows a way, maybe i could go for the free trial of .pdf conversion to Excel tool, or maybe there's an IT guru at the company I'm working for that can help me out....

Okay, so I think that's the way it would go, but I wanted to be sure.

Excel doesn't have the ability to open non-Excel files natively.

You can use Shell to open the PDF reader (Acrobat) with the name of the pdf file passed to it.

sorry, above my pay grade - you mean like what they used to call a DOS command ? or script ? I would have no idea how to accomplish that - aren't there applications I could buy (or get a free trial) to convert .pdf to Excel ?

well, update : SOME good news - I found a YT video that's like a MINUTE, that shows how to save a .pdf as an excel file - I would love to automate the process, but I'm thrilled to death that I can at least save these 160 .pdfs as excel files

the key is you open it / save As "Other" / Spreadsheet / Microsoft Excel ... then rename it, and bada-bing, bada-boom, you are done - I wish I had the add in I had used at the last company I worked at to combine all the excel files.... cryhard.gif

But at least I figured it out, the conversion part - thank god for YouTube !!!

In Excel, can't you record a macro using the manual conversion steps and then edit that macro?

No, I get the gobbly-gook right from jump

the procedure that works, yes, like you said, is opening the pdf in Adobe acrobat XI Pro, then save as Other / Spreadsheet / Microsoft Excel workbook

So you need to automate ACROBAT from within Excel, it would seem.

Not something I have experience doing. sorry.
