UtterAccess Forums _ General Chat _ Earthquake In Pr Disrrupts Power, Communications And Daily Life

A 6.4 earthquake struck Puerto Rico around 3:30am eastern causing significant structural damage and some loss of life. It also knocked out the power grid, telephone and internet service in the entire island. More tremors and earthquakes are expected as they have already experience more than 200 replications within the last week. I have several customers there using my Access pawnshop app, and most have diesel power generators, but they have closed their shops fearing a larger earthquake. Scarry situation, that poor island got beat up by hurricane Maria, and now this! Hope everyone finds safety.

I was there over Christmas. Even went to Ponce (near the epicenter of the earthquake). It's terrible because they haven't even completely rebuilt from the last time there were severe storms. So I can't even imagine what this will be like. Imagine not being able to use an ATM for several weeks...

I used to live in Tonga, in the South Pacific, and while there wasnt much happening when I was there (thankfully), they have been hit with big cyclones, and last year or year before, they had no internet for weeks. No ATMs, nothing worked, banking, anything online etc. Apparently a boat tore up the cable. That wasnt a natural disaster, but shows how dependent society has become on technology and how bad it is when it isnt there.

Yes, they still havent fully recovered from the big hurricane little over 2 years ago and now this. My sister lives north of Ponce in the mountains and I havent been able to contact her via cell, internet or landline. They also dont have running water which is the most vital need. The only posible contact right now is via SatPhone, and Shortware radio for those who have generators. People in PR are trying to fly out but the airlines ridiculously jacked up the airfares and thery're booked solid.

Meantime, it looks like the United States is heading into a full blown war with Iran and who knows who else joins the conflict pullhair.gif

I remember how long it took the city I lived in (Pascagoula Mississippi) to recover from Hurricane Katrina. I remember I was so looking forward to the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi to open that weekend and it ended up being a good while before they were open. I still see some of the scars from the storm. I also remember the stench after the storm, it was overpowering.... I hope Puerto Rico will recover from all the stuff that they are going though.

As for the current situation in the world, it is a bit scary. I hope this does not escalate any further. wary.gif
