All Office Applications, including Word, support the VBA programming language. Each application has its own Object Model that provides functions specific to that application. In Word, for example, you can manipulate Bookmarks programmatically in VBA. References come into play because, in addition to those functions native to the application, you can use functions in the Object Model of other applications, e.g. Excel or Access. In order to do that, though, you have to set a reference to the other application so that Word can find them.

So, if you intend to implement VBA procedures in your Word application, and you want to use functions specific to other applications, you set a reference to them.

In addition to other Object Models, you can add references to non-Microsoft applications to obtain programmatic access to the functions of those applications.

Does that answer your question?

In addition to the basic idea of setting references, you should also be aware of Early Binding and Late Binding, which are different approaches to using Object Models from other applications. I'd recommend you look into Late Binding to round out your understanding.
